Further Development to 'Sins of the Squirrels'.
Dev Diary #10
Over the past 2 weeks, my team and I have reviewed the feedback we received on our game 'Sins of the Squirrels' and implemented further changes. As the team's artist, I focused my efforts on how I could improve the visuals of the game. One of the things that particularly stood out to me was the game's UI and how basic it looked, so I decided to make improving that my priority. I started by hand-writing the words 'play', 'settings', 'controls' and 'quit' in a custom font that fit the colour and style of the game's logo and replaced the basic buttons we originally had with these word images. Additionally, I disliked the basic 'lives = 3' type UI on the game screen and decided to replace it with a similar bubble font and heart icons to represent the lives. These changes were subtle but after comparing the original menu and UI to the new ones, I realized just how much better it looked with a custom typeface.
One of the biggest changes and in my opinion, one of the best new additions to the game was the high score system created by my teammate Avery. Whilst I could only help by creating a custom title 'Leaderboard', the online high score system was an addition that made our game stand out from others, as well as motivate the player to want to replay the game to beat their friend's score. Overall, I'm really proud of what we were able to make during this jam and will definitely be including it in my portfolio.
