Game Jam #2.
Dev Diary #5
With the first game jam finished and the games ranked, it's onto the second game jam! The theme of this project is fighting games and with a larger team and longer time to make it, the scope of what we can make can be more complex too! One of the new additions to this project is having our own producer on our team! Hopefully that'll make working on this game jam more organised and that they will make sure everyone is contributing and on-task.
After meeting the team and assigning roles, we discussed ideas on what we could make. Ultimately, we decided upon a side-scroller beat em up in which you play as a squirrel fighting off dogs in a park. After the feedback I received from the previous game jam, I wanted to ensure our game was original and had more playability. To do this, we decided on making some interesting game mechanics such as having the player transform between two forms, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. As well as this, having the levels be randomized should ensure that each time the game is played, it is unique and allows for it to be played again and again without getting boring.
With the discussions out the way, I moved on to coming up with concepts and ideas for the player sprites. To do this, I took inspiration from games like 'JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (arcade game 1999) and 'Streets of Rage'.
After deciding on the player sprite design, I made some basic walk cycles to use a base for the final animated version. After being satisfied with how the walk cycle looks, I animted the sprites over the top and even made some small animations for the idle and run cycles.
In the next following weeks, I will move on to creating the background, the enemy sprites and the player attack animations, as well as polish the current sprites.
