The Final Project.

The Final Project.

Dev Diary #11

With term one coming to a close, we move on to planning for our final projects for each module. This week, we were to meet our groups for the final game development project and watch various game pitches by the previous year. After watching them, we would decide on which project we would like to take on as our final project. Unfortunately, I was ill and had to miss the lecture where meet our groups and decide which game to take further. Unlike the last game jam however, our producer for this project actively made sure there was communication between teammates and after joining a Discord server they set up for the project, they discussed what happened during the lecture so I could catch up.

The game my team decided upon was a Café fighting game where the player would fight customers but have to clean up the mess they make before their boss comes in. It would be a 3d game and my team decided upon using Unity as we were all familiar with it. After hearing of the concept, I was excited to begin working on the game however I had one major concern; me and Esmé are the only artists in the team and neither of us have much experience with 3d modelling. I was immediately concerned by the time it would take for us to not only model, rig, texture and animate people for the game, but the time it would take to learn how to do it since neither of us has ever done anything like it before. After raising these concerns to the group, we settled on the idea of making it a 2d/3d hybrid by having a 3d environment with 3d objects and furniture but 2d 'billboard' sprites for the enemies you encounter and fight.

After settling on an idea, our producer set us (the artists) a task for creating some concept art before our return in January.
