Sculpting a Face

Sculpting a Face

Dev Diary #33

With the rest of the body done, I could no longer put off the hardest part of the sculpting process - sculpting the face.

Having sculpted a realistic face for my last project, I knew that it would take a long time and would also require more editing and altering than any other part of the body. To save some time, I re-opened my previous project and decided to re-use the facial features from that in this one.

Headshot of my character from my last project

After reshaping the head itself, I started moving and placing the features onto the face.

Referring back to my reference material, I placed the features accordingly and began altering and improving them. Using video tutorials and photos of faces, I carefully reshaped both the features and the head itself to have a more realisitc shape and look.

While I liked the look of the face I had created so far, I could clearly see it was still far from being perfect (or as perfect as I can get at my current skill level). I could see this particuarly from angles other than front-facing, and also after zooming out and viewing the face attached to the body as a whole. As well as this, some features I had re-used from my original model (the eyes and ears) needed a LOT more work done to them to be realistic.

After reflecting on what needed improvement, I continued my work of altering and reshaping the face until I felt it was as realistic as I could make it.

You might notice that by dragging and editing parts of my previous mesh onto this model, certain features such as the mouth, look disjointed and have small artefacts present. Whilst this makes my sculpted model look less nice, ultimately, it won't matter as I'll be retopologising on top of it later anyway.

With the face complete, I thought it would be a good time to compare my second-ever face sculpt to my first (since they're in the same project file after all). This really highlighted the improvement I've made with this model, and despite it still being far from perfect, it reassures me that I have room for improvment yet!

Finally, the sculpted body of my Cyberpunk themed character is complete! Overall, this stage took a lot less time (and turned out a lot better!) than it did with my first full character, reminding me of the improvement I've made so far!

Next up: Retopology!

Stay tuned! :3
